Woman Resorts to Hilarious Method To Teach Dog New Trick—’Tried Everything’

Training a dog is not for the faint of heart. It requires persistence, patience, and sometimes, creativity and one dog owner, who is known on TikTok as @hannahschibi, exhausted all her options when trying to teach her pooch to “speak” or in other words, bark.

Her small dog was not picking up on the command. That’s when the owner recruited someone else to help.

The dog was sitting on the ground with a human squatting in a similar position. The person standing up held a treat and turned to the human first, asking them to “speak.” This was their new way of teaching the dog the trick.

The text on the January 24 TikTok video reads: “POV: you’ve tried everything to teach your dog a trick and you’ve resorted to insanity.”

It’s too bad that insanity didn’t work out in their favor. The dog continued to sit there without speaking. Instead, she stared at them with judgment.

The hilarious clip quickly reached over 3.1 million views, 282,500 likes, and 978 comments. Viewers couldn’t control their laughter at this desperate attempt and many have said they’ve had similar experiences.

“Not the dog observing like she’s a scientist and y’all are her test subjects,” wrote a TikTok user.

One viewer said: “As a fellow dog mom, we’ve all been here.”

“I taught mine how to speak by putting dogs barking on YouTube, when she barked back I rewarded her,” suggested another.

Newsweek reached out to @hannahschibi via TikTok for comment.

Once a dog knows how to speak, it is easier to teach them to be “quiet” on cue, according to the American Kennel Club.

AKC also suggested the following to help teach your dog the speak command. First, make sure you have a reward such as a dog treat or toy in your hand. That way you can immediately give them the praise when they follow the command.

The key to getting your dog to speak is getting them excited to bark. While some dogs are more vocal than others, you might have to try running or jumping around with your dog to excite them. Once the bark happens, immediately mark it by saying “speak” followed by their reward.

Like it is for any training, pet parents need to be consistent, as it will take time for them to understand and pick up the speak command. Once your dog does get the hang of it, try adding in a hand signal. Just remember, practice makes perfect.
