Puppy love: Pet weddings on the rise in China

Puppy love: Pet weddings on the rise in China

It was a dream wedding, complete with picturesque outdoor setting, white lace gown and a delectable cake. The perfect day for golden retrievers – Bree and Bond – to tie the knot in front of their closest human and canine friends. Pet weddings are on the rise in China, where government policies have had little success in encouraging more humans to wed in this fast-ageing society where the population is declining and marriage and birth rates remain low. The popularity of pets and an increasing willingness to splurge on them are driving the trend. Spending on furry companions in 2023 rose 3.2% to 279.3 billion yuan ($38.41 billion) from a year earlier, industry figures show. “People have weddings. Why can’t dogs have weddings?” Bree’s owner Rye Ling said after escorting his female pet down the aisle, where she exchanged vows promising to always share treats and play with her husband Bond. As of 2023, there were more than 116 million cats and dogs in urban China, according to figures by research firm Acuity Knowledge Partners. If distributed evenly across China’s urban population, roughly one in eight Chinese people own a cat or a dog, with a majority of owners under 40, according to the research firm. Ling and his girlfriend Gigi Chen, who said they’re in no rush to get married themselves, meticulously planned the canine ceremony for months, arranging professional photographers, designing wedding booklets and ordering a custom-made, 800-yuan cake complete with toppers that resemble Bree and Bond. Yang Tao, whose Shanghai-based pet bakery prepared the cake, said she was initially surprised that customers wanted wedding cakes for their dogs. “I think there will be more and more dog weddings,” Yang said, adding that she has already catered several similar ceremonies since her bakery was launched in 2022. “We have already received an order for a few months from now … and that’s for a dog wedding.” Ling said he hoped the ceremony would give Bree and Bond a “sense of ritual”. Ling, who said he wanted only one child, also hopes to welcome puppies soon. ($1 = 7.2712 Chinese yuan) Read More

How Dogs and Vanity Fair Got Sarah Paulson on ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’

How Dogs and Vanity Fair Got Sarah Paulson on ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’

Sarah Paulson is having a day when we chat about her recent Emmy nomination for outstanding guest actress in a drama series. “My dogs are shitting everywhere, so let’s just pretend that nothing’s happening,” she says moving through her living room on Zoom.  Incidentally, it was a dog — and Paulson’s natural wit — that led to her role as John (Donald Glover) and Jane (Maya Erskine) Smith’s unnamed therapist on the Prime Video series when she found herself in Glover’s vicinity at last year’s Vanity Fair Oscar party. “Somebody had their dog, and I’m a dog obsessive, and Donald was standing there, and I was doing a bit about the dog, talking about how fabulous it was to be at the Vanity Fair party, and he was chuckling at me,” Paulson recalls. Later, Glover asked Pedro Pascal for Paulson’s number. “I was like, ‘You can give Donald Glover anything he wants of mine,’ ” Paulson says she told Pascal. “You can give it all to him, give him my home address, my email, you can give him my firstborn that I’m never going to have, like, you can take it all.” Three days later, Glover sent Paulson a text saying he’d like her to take a look at the script for episode six of the spy series and that the part of the therapist was hers if she wanted it. Paulson agreed without hesitation: “Donald Glover calls, and if you know what’s what, you say yes.” What were your first thoughts when you read the script? What’s so funny is that this is guest actress in a drama, but my stuff on the show is funny. I remember being sort of surprised that it was in the drama category, but I think it’s because my episode and my scenes had a comedic element to them, but the rest of the series doesn’t so much. It rides that fine line between comedy and drama very, very well, so that when something serious happens, it sort of catches you by the throat. And when something funny happens, you’re like, “Wait a minute, am I allowed to laugh?”  What was your approach to the character? Did you watch Couples Therapy in preparation? Oh, first of all, I’m a Couples Therapy freak. I love that show. The other thing that was so cool about Donald is that, ever since I did Linda Tripp in Impeachment, I’ve worked with this woman named Julia Crockett, who has helped me craft a character from the outside in, sort of taking the things about the character that are happening in the text and physicalizing them. I worked with her all during Appropriate, which I’m convinced is why I won the Tony because she just made the way I work incredibly rewarding. So, I sent a text to Donald, like, “Listen, I know I’m just coming in for one episode, but I work with this woman, and it means she’s usually on set and I don’t want to do that if you’re not down with that.” And he was like, “I’m really a theater nerd at heart; bring whoever you want that’s going to make you feel alive to whatever impulses move you.” He was so gracious to me that way. Because I can imagine him being like, “Girl, you are coming here for five days. Can you please calm down?” So, the main note that I would get from Julia was physically put your body forward. When you watch Couples Therapy, that’s really what [the doc series’ Dr. Orna Guralnik is] always doing. And then we were sort of just playing with the comedy element of a person who really thinks she knows what’s going on between them, but it’s partly because I’m physicalizing the intensity of hyper-awareness.  After this role and guest-starring on The Bear, are you looking to do more comedy? You know, nobody lets me do it. I think what happens is, like in any world, but particularly in our industry, you get pigeonholed in the space in which people see you the most. So, if that’s in a darker space or more of a dramatic world or the horror/thriller genre, that tends to be what comes your way. And if you’re like me and you like to work with interesting people, you tend to continue to say yes to the things that are in front of you because I like to do what I love to do. So, I think some people are not sure that the person who runs around screaming from clowns or acts like Marsha Clark and Linda Tripp is going to be the one who wants to play the crazy therapist, but I do. This is in the drama category, so people probably don’t even know that it’s funny. They don’t know that I’m funny even now. I am funny.  I’ll tell them.  You’ll be like, “I laughed the entire time we were doing this interview, and I am not lying. She is funny. She can run screaming from a clown, sure, but she can also do the other stuff, too.” But, seriously, at the same time, I’m also just happy to be asked to show up anywhere. That is never lost on me, nor will it ever. And the day it is is the day I should hang it up. It will never not be really cool that someone wants me to show up anywhere to do the thing that I’ve wanted to do since I was a tiny person.   This story first appeared in an August stand-alone issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Late French film star Alain Delon wanted his dog buried with him. The dog gets to live

Late French film star Alain Delon wanted his dog buried with him. The dog gets to live

PARIS (AP) — Before he died this week, French film icon Alain Delon once suggested he wanted his beloved sheepdog Loubo buried with him. To the relief of animal lovers around France, Loubo will be allowed to survive. Delon, an internationally acclaimed and prolific actor and producer, died Sunday, aged 88, and will be buried on Saturday at his family home in Douchy, south of Paris. He was quoted in a 2018 interview with Paris Match as saying he wanted Loubo, a Belgian Malinois he adopted in 2014, buried with him. “I’ve had 50 dogs in my life, but I have a particular relationship with this one,’’ he told the magazine. ”If I die before him, I’ll ask the veterinarian for us to leave together. … I’d prefer that to knowing that he would let himself die on my tomb amid so much suffering.’’ After Delon’s death, animal rights activists and concerned citizens raised the alarm about Loubo’s fate. An official with the Brigitte Bardot Foundation — a prominent animal rights group founded by the famed French film star, who was close with Delon — said he contacted Delon’s family after foundation members expressed concern. “They said the question was not even raised, and they would let the dog live. They said he has a home in Douchy, and will live there,’’ the official said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to be publicly named according the Foundation’s communications policies. The official said Delon was a longtime “friend of the foundation’’ and helped raise money for its causes. Delon’s family didn’t publicly comment about the dog. France’s Society for the Protection of Animals welcomed the family’s decision. ‘’Our phone lines were saturated’’ with calls by people worried about the dog, SPA President Guillaume Sanchez told The Associated Press. Loubo “will probably be very sad to have lost the affection of Mr. Delon,’’ Sanchez said. But ”we are totally against the idea that anyone euthanizes an animal for this reason, Delon or no Delon. … Organizations that work to protect animals want society to develop awareness that an animal is an individual, separate being.’’ One of France’s most memorable leading men and best-known film stars, Delon was also a producer and appeared in plays, and in later years, in television movies. Dozens of Puppies Rescued as Woman Charged With Animal Cruelty

A Florida woman is facing over 70 criminal charges, after local law enforcement discovered that she was operating an underground puppy mill out of a home in Brevard County. “I’m so mad I’m shaking,” Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said. “I can’t tell you the conditions that are inside. I feel sorry for our team in having to work this.” The dogs were bred and kept in unsanitary conditions, before being sold online for upwards of $1,000. 37-year old Elisabeth Cleveland has been charged with 38 felony counts of “aggravated animal cruelty,” and is facing a further 38 misdemeanor charges of unlawful confinement. Aggravated animal cruelty is a third-degree felony in Florida, and carries a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison as well as a potential fine of up to $10,000. However, Sheriff Ivey said: “There’s more charges coming.” An officer holding two of the dogs rescued from the Brevard County puppy mill. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office said that they were reaching out to humane societies and fosterers to help find homes for… Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Local police began receiving complaints about Cleveland as far back as 2016. However, when officer’s went to investigate these, Ivey said that Cleveland would tell them to “go to hell,” and refuse entry to her property. After eight years of trying to obtain a search warrant, police were finally permitted to search the residence in June, and discovered dozens of puppies kept in conditions the sheriff said he was unable to describe. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office said that 38 dogs were found, living both inside and outside the dilapidated house. “We’re taking every animal we can, we’re trying to save everyone,” Ivey said. As officers were searching the residence, they discovered water bowls and food dishes filled with mold and vomit. However, the sheriff said that what most bothered him were the “igloo-style doghouses” in which the dogs were kept. When officers checked inside these, they found that the temperatures exceeded 100 degrees. An image taken by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, showing the inside of the house in which the puppies were kept. The dogs were bread at the house in Brevard County before being sold online… Brevard County Sheriff’s Office “We found dogs with open wounds, we found dogs with eye infections, a dog with a broken leg,” Ivey added. “Two of these puppies, sadly, are not going to make it.” Brevard County said that Cleveland had also been practicing veterinarian medicine on the puppies, and allegedly euthanized one. After breeding the dogs at her home, Cleveland would then sell the puppies on a website, run by her and her spouse, called “Curio Kennel.” “Not only do we specialize in uncommon dog breeds, we also take pride in being very different than your typical kennel,” the opening page of the website reads. “In our cage-free kennel, the happiness, healthiness and well-being of each dog is our top priority.” 10 dogs are still listed as available on the website, including a chocolate female of an unspecified breed, which is priced at $1,500. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is now reaching out to local humane societies and individual fosterers to help find homes for the neglected dogs. Regarding the suspect, Ivey said: “She’s sitting right where she belongs in Brevard County jail. And I couldn’t be happier about seeing her butt there.” Do you have a story we should be covering?
